As part of that 'new normal', we are making a start on weekly spelling tests straight away. Each Friday I will do a lesson in class, introducing the ten 'words of the week' to the children. Covid restrictions mean I won't be able to send a paper copy of the words home each week, so I will be emailing them to you. I would like you to support your child to practise spelling the words between now and the test in class next Friday.
Some children work best by writing the words out repeatedly; some children prefer to think of sentences containing each word and write those out. Some children prefer to just read and re-read the words, or to do a verbal memory quiz with an adult or big brother or sister asking the questions. Experiment to find out what suits your child.
I have explained to the children that the spelling tests are not something to stress about -the end goal is not to get 10/10 for it's own sake, but to get better at spelling in their independent writing. So, the children will mark their own tests together as a class and we will discuss ways to remember any words that children struggled with. If they get a word wrong, they copy out the correct spelling next to it to help it stick in their mind.

The children have told me they are happy to try having 20 words instead of 10 for their weekly spelling test. We will give it a try over the half term holiday and see how they get on at the end of the first week back. If it turns out that 20 is too much in one go, we will go back to ten.
