Our Reviews - picture books younger

The Pirate Mums - Jodie Lancet Green and Lydia Corry.

We read this jolly story in Reception, Nursery and Year 1 on World Book Day.

Billy's Mums are pirates. He wishes they be a bit less noticeable, with less singing of sea songs and swashbuckling costumes, until one day on a school trip on a boat, he finds out how amazing his mums really are.

Great colourful illustrations.

A Mouse Called Julian - Joe Todd Stanton

Another great read in Nursery to Year 2 on World Book Day. A beautifully illustrated story with a clever twist at the end, which drew gasps from our children. It shows how the most unlikely animals can be friends and how one good turn really can lead to another.

Tilda Tries Again - Tom Percival

This is one of Tom Percival's 'Big Bright Feelings' books. Poor Tilda's happy world is turned upside down and she finds doing things so tricky, she gives up trying to do anything at all. And then she spots a ladybird stuck on its back.

An uplifting story which has a positive message about how to deal with tricky situations.

The Tale of the Whale - Karen Swann & illustrated by Padmacandra

Padmacandra's illustrations are beautiful and Year 1 got so much of the story from them. The Whale takes the boy on a fantastic journey - all in rhyme, around the world and even under the sea, to show him something important. The boy sees what the Whale is trying to tell him and promises to tell everyone. And ask for their help. Which is where you come in.
