This week's phonics sound is 'a'.

Watch Mr Thorne and Geraldine giraffe as they learn all about the 'a' sound!

Activity sheet 'a'

ACTIVITY 1- SOUND HUNT

Go on a sound hunt around your house, garden or neighbourhood. See how many objects you can see that start with the sound 'a'. You might even find some objects that have the 'a' sound in the middle or the end of the word. HAPPY HUNTING!

 

ACTIVITY 2 - 'a' PICTURE

Draw a picture using objects that start with the 'a' sound. You could have a look in some old magazines for pictures of objects that start with 'a' to make an 'a'college.

 

ACTIVITY 3 - PRACTISE WRITING  'a'

Practise writing the letter 'a'. Try some of these fun ways to practise writing letter 'a'.

 

  • write a in sand with your finger or a stick
  • write a on paper using crayons, pencils, pens, felt tips...see how many different coloured a's you can write.
  • Write a in the bath with water.
  • Use water to 'paint' the letter a outside on the ground
  • Make the letter a with stones, sticks, leaves
  • Paint the letter a

Be as creative as you can...how many ways did you write/make the letter a?

 

ACTIVITY 4 - ROBOT TALK 

Robot talk the words on the cards. Get your adult to robot talk the word first, then repeat after them. Can you hear the 'a' sound in each word. Can you find the 'a' letter in each word? Can you sort the cards into different groups? ie things that move, things that don't move.
